		<description><![CDATA[British Public Radio is proud to launch the inaugural British Public Radio Awards, staged in association with Audioboo, and supported by Roberts Radio]]></description>
				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>British Public Radio is proud to launch the inaugural British Public Radio Awards.</p>
<p>Staged in association with Audioboo, the British Public Radio Awards are designed to encourage and reward the production of great speech radio from both established producers and those who are yet to break into the mainstream.</p>
<p>There are ten awards offered across five categories, plus the Gold Award for the most outstanding entry overall.  The winner of every award will receive a Roberts Union Jack Sports DAB 2 personal radio.  The winner of the Gold Award will also receive a Roberts Union Jack Revival RD60 DAB Digital Radio.</p>
<p>All qualifying entries will be showcased on the <a href="http://audioboo.fm/channel/british-public-radio-awards">BPR Awards Audioboo channel</a>, with shortlisted entries broadcast in full on the British Public Radio programme stream.</p>
<p>Entries may be made online at <a  href="http://www.britishpublicradio.com/2013/04/british-public-radio-awards/">http://britishpublicradio.com/awards</a> and are open from now until July 15th 2013.</p>
<p>Entry is open to all, including established producers, podcasters, community and internet radio stations and individuals. The only exclusions are items previously aired on BBC or commercial stations.</p>
<p><a  href="http://www.britishpublicradio.com/judges/">Judges</a> include writer/director Dirk Maggs, Radioplayer MD Michael Hill, radio futurologist James Cridland, former Deputy Controller BBC 5 Live Steve Kyte, MD of Pixiu Alex Feldman and Audioboo’s Head of Content Amanda Brown, as well as British Public Radio founders Tim Nice, Matt Hopper and Ken Rayner.</p>

<p>Sue Pryce’s book &#8220;Fixing Drugs: the Politics of Drug Prohibition&#8221; assesses the arguments that prop up the drug war. In this programme Sue talks to Roger Howard, formerly chief executive of the UK Drug Policy Commission, about the political and personal aspects of the drug problem.</p>

<p>The stories are written and read by refugees and are inspired by the theme ‘turning 18’, with introductions by Zoë Wanamaker, Vivienne Westwood, Grayson Perry, and Peter Tatchell.</p>

Mati arrived in England, aged 14, from a small Afghan farming village.  After both his father and brother disappeared, Mati’s mother arranged for an agent to smuggle him out of the country.  He embarked on a three month journey, traversing seven countries by truck and on foot. </p>
<p>Today, Mati has been given leave to remain in the UK and as well as attending college he regularly volunteers with Refugee Council and Cricket 4 Change, helping other children who arrive in the UK in similar circumstances.  </p>
<p>His story is introduced by Zoe Wanamaker.</p>

<p>Akilea was trafficked to the UK from Tanzania at the age of 15.</p>
<p>In her story, Akilea reflects on the run-up to her eighteenth birthday, describing the difficulties she encountered on trying to forge a life for herself as a young person in the UK without the support of her family.</p>
<p>Her story is introduced by Vivienne Westwood.</p>

<p>Tariq turned 18 in Jamaica where homosexual acts are punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment. As a gay man he claimed asylum in the UK after a violent homophobic incident and threats to his family’s safety. </p>
<p>Tariq’s story provides a nostalgic snapshot of the day before he turned 18, and is introduced by artist Grayson Perry.</p>

<p>Valentina arrived in the UK aged 17 having been trafficked from Bolivia. Her piece depicts the complexities of turning 18 in a strange country with no family or friends, trying desperately to come to terms with traumatic events and attempting to find a voice in society. </p>
